Helping Reconstruction with Reuse
To support regional fire reconstruction efforts, Unbuilt, a Los Angeles start-up, has launched Unbuilt Exchange, a website for connecting local builders, designers and homeowners wishing to buy, sell or trade unused building goods from ongoing projects. Unbuilt Exchange will be freely available to the local construction community through the Q1 of 2026.
"Pre-owned goods are really popular right now across the economy, but still a tiny fraction in the building goods market." said company co-founder Sara Noyes. "We're making a free tier for Exchange to make it attractive to sellers with more products, so more buyers find goods they can use in projects. Those connections save everybody space, time, money and waste."
Addressing a Local Problem
Sourcing construction materials requires long lead times and builders can experience supply overages (surplus) or shortages when plans change before, during or after construction. The problem is exacerbated during mass building events where timelines and supply chains are disrupted. Excess, unused goods often accumulate unintentionally on job sties, where they interfere with work. When builders lack the time or resources to move, store, donate or sell them, they’re often thrown away along with debris waste.
Unbuilt Exchange simplifies the process of listing or re-purchasing these goods to help redirect them from landfill and solve supply shortages. The site offers functionality similar to general consumer marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace, but with a user experience, features and community that’s specifically optimized for construction. For example, companies can create standard single-item listings or ‘lot listings,’ that are helpful for jobsite close-outs where a group of goods is sold together with a fixed deadline. Non-useful listings are also weeded out to showcase high-quality, new-condition goods, with minimum quantity standards.
Building Better
By making Exchange free to use in Los Angeles, Unbuilt aims to support reconstruction efforts by:
- Keeping job sites safer and more efficient by reducing clutter
- Aiding affordability by controlling material costs, which account for roughly half of total building costs
- Reducing construction waste, the largest source of solid landfill waste and natural resource extraction, as well as a primary contributor to carbon emissions.
